Das aus dem Lateinischen abgeleitete Wort Fokus bezeichnet den Brennpunkt einer Linse oder eines optischen Systems. Das ist der Punkt, an dem sich die parallel in die Linse einfallenden und dadurch gebrochenen Lichtstrahlen hinter der Linse schneiden.
Das ist auch der Punkt, in dem ein durch die Linse erfasstes Objekt scharf abgebildet wird.

Schärfepriorität oder Einzelbild-AF
Dieser sehr häufig eingesetzte AF-Modus ist für unbewegte Objekte gedacht.
Der Schärfepunkt wird durch Halbherunterdrücken des Auslösers festgelegt und bleibt so eingestellt, auch wenn die Kamera verschwenkt wird. Befindet sich nach dem Verschwenken am Schärfepunkt kein Objekt, löst die Kamera nicht aus und versucht auch nicht, erneut etwas scharf zu stellen. Das bedeutet auch, wenn sich das anvisierte Objekt zwischen Fokussieren und Auslösen spürbar bewegt, löst die Kamera ebenfalls nicht aus.

Nachführmessung oder Nachführ-AF
In diesem Modus versucht die Kamera ständig, ein sich bewegendes Objekt scharf zu halten.
Das gilt auch, wenn sich das Objekt im gesamten Bildformat bewegt und dabei in den Bereich anderer AF-Sensoren gerät. Damit ist dieser Modus für Sportfotografie und andere Actionaufnahmen prädestiniert. Auch für schnelle Serienaufnahmen sich verändernder Szenerien wird dieser Modus gern verwendet. Dabei wird mit Sicherheit nicht jede Aufnahme wirklich scharf. Aber es ist besser, Du hast das vielleicht einmalige Ereignis mit leichter Unschärfe im Kasten, als auf die exakte Scharfstellung zu warten und dabei die Aufnahmechance zu verpassen.

Automatischer Autofokus
Dieser Modus ist nichts anderes als die Kombination der beiden anderen AF-Modi. Die Kamera versucht bei dieser Einstellung, selbsttätig zu erkennen, wenn das fokussierte Objekt in Bewegung gerät. In dem Fall schaltet sie von der Schärfepriorität in die Nachführmessung um.
Das klingt wie der ideale AF-Modus für alle Gelegenheiten. Aber in der Praxis hat sich gezeigt, dass die Schärfepriorität für unbewegte Objekte eine höhere Genauigkeit liefert. Und bei bewegten Objekten ist die Nachführmessung tatsächlich ebenfalls die bessere Alternative.
